Hotels and forest along the shore of Lake Titisee

Titisee

The southern Black Forest’s holiday lake

Titisee is the southern Black Forest’s holiday lake: a glacial lake about 2 km long below the Feldberg, the highest mountain in the Black Forest. Its northern shore is a lively promenade of hotels, cafés, cuckoo-clock shops and boat hire; the southern shore is quiet forest.

It is a very different place from the Mummelsee — bigger, busier and made for swimming and boating in summer — and it makes an easy day trip if you are also visiting Freiburg or Triberg.

Top things to do at Titisee

Get out on the water

Hire a pedal or rowing boat, or take a short sightseeing cruise around the lake. In summer, lidos along the shore make it one of the Black Forest’s favourite swimming lakes.

Walk the lakeside path

A path runs all the way round the lake — about 6 km, easy and mostly shaded on the southern shore.

Cake and clocks on the promenade

Seestraße, the lakeside promenade, is lined with cafés serving Black Forest cake and shops selling cuckoo clocks and smoked ham.

How to get to Titisee

  • From the Mummelsee: around 2–2.5 hours by car, so it is best combined with a night in Freiburg or the southern Black Forest.
  • By train: Titisee station is on the Höllentalbahn from Freiburg, roughly 40 minutes.
  • On a tour: the Freiburg, Titisee & Triberg day trip from Strasbourg includes time at the lake.

Insider tips

  • Titisee is busiest at weekends in summer; the southern shore path is much quieter than the promenade.
  • If you only have time for one lake, the Mummelsee is easier to reach from Baden-Baden and Strasbourg.

Titisee FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Titisee or Mummelsee — which is better?

They are very different. The Mummelsee is small, wild and legendary, right on the High Road; Titisee is a large resort lake with swimming and cruises. From Baden-Baden or Strasbourg, the Mummelsee is much closer.

Can you swim in Titisee?

Yes, in summer there are public bathing areas along the shore — unlike the Mummelsee, which is not a bathing lake.
